Some information about Vedic literature

The period from about 1500 BC to 600 BC is considered to be the Vedic period or Aryan civilization. Aryan civilization is divided into two parts (1) Rik Vedic age or early Vedic age (approximately 1500-1000 BC) and (2) post-Vedic period (approximately 1000-600 BC). 


Some important information about the Vedic literature of Aryan civilization  

  1. The Vedas are 4 ,Rik, Sam, Jadu, and Atharva Vedas 
  2. The oldest Veda is the Rik Veda and the last written Veda is the Atharva Veda. The period of composition of Rikveda is about 1400 BC.
  3. Kaushiki and Aitareya are the ones who helped in composing the Rig Veda. The number of verses in the Rig Veda is 1026 
  4. Each Veda has two divisions - Sanhita and Brahman. The Sanhita part is mainly composed in Padma and the Brahman part is mainly composed in Gadma. 
  5. Aranyaka and Upanishads are attached to the Brahmanical part as an appendix to the Vedas.
  6. From the Rik Veda we know about the early Vedic age. And the later Vedic period is known from the literature of Jadu, Sam, Atharva and Vedanta.
  7. There are 6 scriptures that help in the study of Vedanga or Veda. Namely - Education, Kalpa, Grammar, Nirukta, Rhythm and Astrology.
  8. Bedangs are called Sanhita. Collection or compilation of the meaning of the word Sanhita. 
  9. Apart from mantras in the Atharva Veda, it was not considered to be a very sacred scripture as it spoke of good and evil magic and healing.
  10. A sukta with a few mantras and a mandal with a few suktas. The Rig Veda has 10,600 mantras, 1,026 suktas and 10 mandals.
  11. Aryans learned to use the alphabet around 600-700 BC. 
  12. There are 33 deities mentioned in Rikveda. 
  13. The Gayatri mantra was composed by the priest Bishwamitra of the Aryan king Sudas. Its purpose was to expand the rights of the Aryans. This is a sun worship.
  14. There are 26 thousand verses in Ramayana. There are 1026 verses in Mahabharata.
  15. There are one lakh kalpa stories in the Mahabharata which is why it is called Shat Sahasra Sanhita or Joy Sanhita.
  16. There are 108 Upanishads. There are 18 old ones. The Gita has 16 chapters.
